Ethera, colors, and gases

Ethera is BHT’s latest start-up; the business was founded in March 2010 by three partners (including Sylvain Colomb from BEM* and Yves Bigay from DSM) who have developed a sol-gel based technology to detect all types of gases in the atmosphere. Ethera’s nanoporous sponges are soaked in a principal agent specific to gas research; their color changes in a linear fashion according to the gas concentration.

The new start-up will target the indoor air quality market. Its first product will be a formaldehyde detector; in France, inspectors already measure formaldehyde in daycare centers and schools ahead of a new regulation that will go into effect in 2012. Ethera’s product range will also include dosimeters for employees exposed to formaldehyde and devices to measure chronic exposure.
