Minatec® was launched at the instigation of the CEA and the Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble (INPG),
bringing together 4,000 people at Grenoble's scientific research centre.
The site is already home to Leti, Europe's top centre for applied
research in microelectronics and microtechnology, and its considerable
resources.
The various new buildings will be completed between now and 2006.
In 2001, 6,000 sq m of temporary structures were installed to accommodate
the first laboratories, startups, European networks and researchers
attracted by the Minatec® dynamic. |
> Research platform
- 8,500 sq m of clean rooms in existing CEA-Leti
facilities;
- Advanced components: 14,000 sq m of new premises for characterization,
photonics and design;
- Smart devices: 5,000 sq m with MINATEC
IDEAsLaboratory, an idea generator;
- 1,200 people from CEA and university laboratories working on upstream,
fundamental basic and applied technology research.
> Industrial development complex
- 10,000 sq m of premises and clean rooms for startups in the early stage,
joint laboratories and R&D teams from firms involved in Minatec technology
transfers;
- 1,000 jobs in industry are planned to accompany this activity.

Training premises
- Initial training: 9,000 sq m of buildings for 1,000 student engineers
and 120 faculty members from INP
Grenoble: notably two schools, the Graduate School of Electronics
and Radioelectricity (ENSERG) and Graduate School
of Physics (ENSPG), the Telecommunications
Department and the Doctoral School of Electronics, Electrical engineering,
Automation, Telecommunications and Signals (EEATS).
- Continuous training: 500 interns will be taken every year by the new
Continuous Training in Microelectronics and Microsystems
(CFCMM).
- The Interuniversity Micrelectronics Centre (CIME),
with 3,000 sq m of new premises and clean rooms, due to open at Minatec
in 2005, will act as a resource centre for all the above training activities.
> Maison des Micro et Nano Technologies
- 5,000 sq m of offices, with meeting rooms, a library and a 300-seat
auditorium;
- Social and coordination centre, in the middle of the training, research
and development facilities, accommodating about 100 people on a temporary
or permanent basis.

The pedestrian precinct is an essential part
of Minatec, running north from the MMNT. The centre's main
activities are located on either side of the precinct.
It is both a means of access and a place to meet and relax.
It will have an indoor atmosphere, thanks to the canopies
over the entrances and the interplay and light and shade from
the lattice roof.

The Maison
des Micro et Nanotechnologies (MMNT) is the centre's frontispiece,
opening onto the city of Grenoble. It is entirely given over
to exchange and communication. In particular it houses an
amphitheatre seating 400 people.
